Dog owners have an important decision to make when choosing to use a crate for their dog. They need to decide what material of a crate that their dog is going to use. The two main choices of crates are a plastic dog crate or a metal dog crate. There are benefits to using both different types depending on what you intend for the functions of the crate to be along with the breed, behavior and size of your dog as well.

Choosing a metal dog crate gives you the benefit of having a crate that is both durable and strong which really helps when having a large or equally destructive dog that loves to chew on your hands. It is not possible to chew through metal and some dogs have a streak in them that causes them to want to chew and destroy everything in their path whether it is clothing, shoes or electronics. This can be costly as well as dangerous if something ends up being swallowed that is harmful to their intestinal tract.Metal Dog Crate

Whether you use a plastic or metal dog crate you will need to know that. The bottom of a dog crate is usually plastic though for both comfort and ease of cleanliness. Cleaning the dog crate may be a bit more difficult because all of the individual wire sections need to be cleaned while plastic can be wiped down in one quick swipe. They also have the benefit of being collapsible if space is an issue in your home. It is also helpful if it needs to be moved often from room to room or even house to house.

A dog crate, regardless of what material it is made out of, provides a comforting home for the dog when it is needed. A crate is meant to be like a den and is not a form of closure or punishment for an animal. They can be an area for a pet to be comfortable and also allows for them to have their own privacy when and if it is needed. A crate that is plastic or has a blanket over it will give a dog the level of privacy they may desire every once and awhile.

House breaking a dog can be a very difficult process but it is made easier with the assistance of a metal dog crate which provides a sense of both security and safety. As long as this training is done correctly  the dog will not resent the cage.

When crate training one of the most important parts of the process in deciding to crate train is not only the method by which you decide to train but the size of the crate as well. It makes sense that if you have a large breed of dog you are going to need a large dog crate as well. Your dog needs to have adequate space to make his or her crate equal to a den or home instead of seeing it as a trap or uncomfortable cage that they are placed into often.

Obviously, a large dog crate is going to cost a bit more than a small dog crate because of the material differences.  There are crates that serve different purposes. Some are meant to be used inside on a daily basis to be left in one location while others are used for traveling both in cars and on airplanes as well. The crate material is highly dependent upon the functionality of it. Large Dog CrateWire and plastic can both be used in the home while for traveling it is recommended to use plastic. You can find a dog crate at a pet store or even in a variety of hardware stores. If you’re looking to save some money you may also look in the newspaper for people selling ones that they no longer need. A medium to large dog crate will cost you approximately $50-$125 for one of good quality.

When deciding what size of crate to buy, you may look into getting one that can have a divider because it will be very costly to buy a new crate every time your dog gets bigger. This will aid you in training and saving financially.

When people begin considering the idea of getting a puppy or dog one thing that should come to their minds is whether or not they know the basics of dog crate training. Experts recommend that anyone who gets a dog should train them using a crate for both their benefit along with the new addition to their families.

 Start Training

Training can take a varied amount of time depending upon the effort put into it, the breed and how well your individual puppy takes to it. For some people it takes a few days while with others it takes a few weeks. The important part is to remain consistent.

In order to be successful with dog crate training you must follow a few simple but crucial steps to make the process go as smoothly as possible for both of you. When introducing your dog to the crate, be certain to make it comfortable by inserting a blanket or towel inside. In order to convince him or her to enter you may need to toss a treat inside.

Building up your dog’s comfort with the crate is the key to getting them to enter it without having anxiety which is accomplished by making baby steps.  Do not force them into being in the crate too soon or too much and allow them to spend brief time periods of about ten to twenty minutes in the crate to get comfortable with it before you begin leaving them alone for long periods of time.

Dog Training

A few problems that occur with crate training arise when people place their dog in the kennel for too long. Puppies, for example, cannot be placed in the crate for longer than 3-4 hours because their bowels are not strong enough. In dog crate training many people also experience the issue of whining. Whining should not be given attention because then they may realize that whining equals getting out and they may whine any time they are placed inside the crate. Another thing that a crate should not be used for is as a form of punishment or for separation anxiety.

Dog crate training should be used for night times and when you leave the house. Your dog or puppy should feel comfortable inside their crate and you can do this by keeping their favorite toys and treats inside as well as ensuring that it is adequately sized for them to be able to stand up and turn around.

One odd item that is on the market for dog crates is a heating pad that can be inserted into your pets bed to keep them warm for up to twelve hours while they are in there.  When crate training many people end up ultimately giving up and failing because they don’t know the basics to the process and go into it with an empty slate that only leads to headache and stress. If you’re a first time crater or even an experienced one, there are a few tips you should keep in mind when training your puppy or recently acquired dog.

The whole purpose of having a dog crate is to allow it to keep your dog secure by means of a simple cage that contains a dog crate door in a variety of materials from wire, to metal, to plastic. Making sure that your dog has a crate that caters to their needs without being too big is one of the major steps to success. Your dog needs to have room to walk through the dog crate door and be able to turn around and lie down. However, you don’t want him or her to be able to use it as a toilet and then lie down in a separate section. That would classify as being too large of a crate for their size.Dog Crate Door

In choosing a crate you will also have the option of having one door or multiple dog crate doors. The functionality of having more than one door is mainly for size and space concerns you may have.  One door will allow your dog to enter and exit from one location while multiple gives them the luxury of another or even two other choices of entry and exit.  It isn’t a big deal and sometimes choice of what type of dog crate door yours will have will narrow down to which is cheaper for you.

Consistency is the key to a successful crate training experience. If you associate a command such as “kennel” with your dog and point to the kennel they will get the message and begin to enter when you tell them. Sometimes tossing in a treat will give them the bit of encouragement that they need in the process as well.

You may also want to think of keeping the dog crate door open even if you’re not trying to get your dog to enter. Soon they will associate the crate with being a comfortable second home to them and may freely exit and enter on their own free will. With some effort and time you will soon have a dog or puppy that is crate trained and your home will be free of accidents.

When a pet owner decides that they are going to use a crate with their dog they need to ensure that they choose the correct dog crate cage for their dogs size and needs. Most people do not realize that dogs are naturally used to a den setting so a cage is not alarming to them but is instead very comforting.

It is not cruel to use one and your pet may be more at ease. They can also be used for transportation if for some reason you need to move your dog from one location to another, regardless of how often; it will allow you to have a better handle on your dog’s safety during the trip.Dog Crate Cage

Dog crate cages come in a variety of different materials from wire to plastic and even lightweight breathability forms to allow more air circulation. Wire crates may be more visually appealing and are better for a dog who chews frequently since it cannot be ingested. They are a bit harder to clean though. The benefit of using a plastic cage is that they are airline approved if you need for fly for some reason with your animal and have been recommended for dogs that get anxious more since they’re a bit more enclosed and den like.

The size of the dog crate cage is very important in the crate training process. You want to make sure that the cage is large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around but not large enough for them to have a bathroom area in it that they can separate from the area that they are sleeping and standing in. A correctly sized crate will make them more comfortable and make the crate training process more successful as well. Another step for determining height and length is to measure from the nose to the tail and add a foot and the back to the floor and add a foot.

Choosing the correct dog crate cage is probably the biggest decision you will make that will make that predicts the success of your training overall. If the cage is too large or too small you will encounter problems. Be aware that your first choice of crate may not be the best suited and you might have to experiment a little with sizes and material in order to have the most success in training both adult dogs and puppies as well.
